La Pedemontana Della Reit
La Pedemontana Della Reit
For a relaxing walk in the mountains suitable for all and accessible most of the year round, the Pedemontana della Reit is ideal. It starts just 5 minutes from the centre of Bormio on the road that leads to the Stelvio Pass, just before the Bagni Vecchi thermal spa in Pravasio. The trail, initially built during the Great War, crosses the southern slopes of the Reit mountain, the imposing Dolomite mountain that overlooks Bormio, cutting it in half.
From the trail you can see the entire Bormio valley , with spectacular views of the historic town from above, as well as the panorama of the surrounding mountains, including, directly opposite, the Vallecetta where the slopes of Bormio are located, and to the right, the Cima Piazzi with its impressive glacier.
The Pedemontana starts with a slight uphill incline, but soon becomes almost entirely flat for long tracts, and there are many deviations that you can take to make a quick return to Bormio. As you set off you will immediately find yourself in a forest of larch trees (the name of the Reit comes from this forest, which was once known as the Laricetum) that displays a dazzling array of colours, especially in the autumn.
Just ahead we come to the Campello valley and the deviation that leads to the Rezia Botanic Garden. It is in this area that the characteristic green stone was quarried that can be found in many architectural features in buildings around Bormio. Continuing on you reach the path that leads to the Croce della Reit, the large cross found almost at the very top of the mountain. The trail continues straight towards Paramezzano, crossing a clearing at Pian de la Reit where you can stop off at a picnic area with tables. At this point the path starts a rapid descent until it meets the trail towards the Uzza Valley. The path on the right leads to the Baite di Pramezzano (1429m)
Here there is another deviation, continuing downhill to the left you reach the small village of Uzza, 2 km from Bormio. Heading instead through the meadow in the middle of the ‘baite’ (traditional mountain huts) and following the sign to Bormio, you cross a pretty field and find yourself on a narrow path that takes you, via meadows and tracts of forest, to the remains of the S.Pietro Castle (the area is known as Gesa Rota, 1322m) that are visible just above Bormio.
Alternatively, you can take the trail from the park of the Bagni Nuovi, which connects to the Pedemontana trail via the main road, or take the path from the Rezia Botanic Garden towards Pravasio, which runs alongside a small stream that crosses the Campello Valley.
